Full Entry Rules and Guidelines
It is a condition of entry that all rules are accepted as final and that the entrant agrees to abide by these rules. Please read the following and complete the tick-box consent at the bottom of this page.
- Eligibility: As the entrant, YOU must a) have received blood - or had a loved one receive blood - that was donated voluntarily, b) have donated blood voluntarily, or c) have supported the giving or receiving of voluntary blood as part of your job, charitable work or volunteering at the time of the story. This competition is open to children and adults. Children under the age of 18 will need permission of an adult parent or guardian. You can enter as a group, but the lead entrant must meet the eligibility criteria and will be the one to receive the prize money.
- Specific Exclusions: No one affiliated with Action on Blood or GBF will be eligible to participate in the competition. That includes employees of Action on Blood or GBF, their immediate family members and those living in their households or in the households of their family members. Similarly for the judges, the family members and those living in their households or in the households of their family members will also be ineligible.
- Competition Period: Entries will be accepted online, starting 1st May 2024 and ending midnight, 31st May 2024. Entries date-stamped before or after this window will be deemed ineligible. Winners will be announced on 14th June 2024, World Blood Donor Day.
- Submissions: The competition will be open for entries of stories told through creative content, suitable for social media sharing. This includes short video clips, stories, animations, poetry recitals, music videos, songs, audio stories, podcasts and interviews. This list is not exhaustive, and more than one medium can be used. Up to 5 files of up to 20Mb per entry can be submitted. Maximum lengths are advised as 3 mins duration for video and audio and 1,000 words for stories, speeches, poems and song lyrics. Images should be captioned, to a maximum of 500 words. However, more succinct content will generally be preferred. The narrative must be based on real events (i.e. not a work of fiction) and the subject matter should have some association with the geographic area served by Action On Blood (Lagos State, Nigeria). Entrants are encouraged to be as creative and innovative as possible. Content can be in English, pidgin, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa or any other language or dialect spoken in Nigeria. Please note that if your content is not in English, it MUST have English subtitles so that it can be shared to wider audiences, internationally.
- How to Enter: The Competition is entered by submitting an entry using the competition site - https://lagos.bloodstory.org/. The entry must fulfil all competition requirements, as specified, to be eligible to win a prize. Entries that are not complete or do not adhere to the rules or specifications may be disqualified at the sole discretion of Action On Blood and GBF. You may submit more than one entry. People under the age of 18 are permitted to submit entries with permission from a parent or guardian. The latter must be available to bring the child to collect any prize money, should the child win.
- How to Win: Winners for this competition will be selected by a panel of FIVE judges, with varied backgrounds, expertise, and perspectives. No more than two of the judges will be representatives of Action on Blood. The judges’ decisions will be final. Winners will be announced on World Blood Donor Day and notified by email. Action On Blood and GBF reserve the right not to award one or more of the listed prizes where - by agreement of the judges – none of the submissions received are deemed to meet a subjective threshold of “publishable quality”.
- Prizes: Prizes for the competition are $500 for 1st prize, $300 for 2nd prize, $200 for 3rd prize. The judges, at their discretion, may award an undetermined number of $100 special commendation prizes to recognise submissions deserving of special attention and to reward projects that bring a lot of value to the competition. You are not guaranteed to win a prize and your chance of winning is dependent on the total number of eligible entries received. Acceptance of prize constitutes permission for Action On Blood and GBF to use winner's name, likeness, and entry for purposes of advertising and trade without further compensation, unless prohibited by law. Winners can choose to receive their prizes in US dollars (cash) or in Naira (cash or bank transfer) converted at the prevailing foreign exchange on the 31st May 2024. Winners will have to collect their prize IN PERSON at Action On Blood’s office in Lekki, Lagos in the week beginning Monday, 10th June 2024. Proof of identity - e.g. voter’s card, international passport, driving licence - will be required. Where the winner is under the age of 18 and does not have his/her own proof of identity, the parent that countersigned the submission must attend with the child.
- Notification: Winners of the Competition will be notified by e-mail in the week ending Friday, 7th June 2024. They will be asked to collect their prizes and take part in competition promotion for the public announcement of the winners, between the 7th and 12th of June. Entrants should ensure they are available, in Lagos, over this time period. Action On Blood and GBF will take no liability for a winner's failure to receive notices due to winners' spam, junk e-mail or other security settings or for winners' provision of incorrect or otherwise non-functioning contact information. If any winner cannot be reached after reasonable efforts have been exerted during five (5) days from the date of the selection, or if he/she is found to be ineligible, or if he/she cannot or if he/she is unable to pick up their prize and take part in competition promotion at the stated dates, or does not comply with any other Competition Rules, such winner may be disqualified and an alternate winner selected.
